11 Energy Efficiency Tips You Need to Know

by On Jan 31 2018

If you’re looking to save money and help the environment, then saving electricity efficiently is your first step. There are many ways that we can save energy on a daily basis by being aware of how much energy is used, where you’re wasting energy, and how you can more efficiently use appliances in your home.

To get you started on a more energy-efficient lifestyle, here are a few of our favorite energy-saving tips:

  1. Before lowering your thermostat during the summer, make sure you’re using all other options to keep your home cool. This includes turning on fans, keeping doors and windows closed, and drawing shades and curtains during the day.
  2. Clean your air filters each month and replace them regularly. This will allow your A/C system to work more efficiently.
  3. When you’re done charging a device, turn off its power strip or unplug it. This goes for all electronics.
  4. In the winter, switch the rotation of your ceiling fans to clockwise and keep them on low to push hot air down.
  5. Most clothes, even towels, don’t need to be washed in hot water. Switch to washing in cold water to use less electricity.
  6. Don’t open the oven when it’s in use. Each time you open the oven, you’re lowering the temperature, which can add to the cook time of your dish.
  7. On cool days, open your shades and curtains to use natural light instead of artificial light.
  8. Adjust your thermostat by only one or two degrees at a time. You might be surprised at how little it takes to cool or heat your home.
  9. Try to use your dishwasher and clothes dryer in the evening. This will keep your house cooler during the day.
  10. When using your bathroom and kitchen vent, don’t forget to turn it off. Using it longer than necessary wastes energy.
  11. If you have a toaster oven or microwave, consider using it instead of the oven when reheating small portions.
