How to Change Electricity Providers in Texas

by On Jan 15 2017

One of the great things about living in Texas is that we have the right to choose our own electricity provider. The electricity market in our state is deregulated, which means that Texas retail electricity providers buy energy from generators at wholesale prices and then compete with each other to offer consumers more options in terms of their electricity plans. Residents of other states can only get electricity from the utility company and must pay the rates the utility requires.

Even if you’re happy with your current electricity provider, you don’t have to stay with them forever. You have the freedom to switch electricity providers and find the best service and the best rates to meet your changing electric needs. We all do! Texans switch electricity providers for many reasons, too. Some choose to switch power supply providers because they need a more reliable fixed-rate electricity plan. Others move to a new utility area that their current retail provider doesn’t service. Still others switch providers because they are unhappy with their current provider’s pricing or level of customer service. Many more want to, but aren’t sure how.

Let’s change that! Switching residential or commercial electricity providers in Houston and across Texas isn’t difficult, and it’s often worth the small amount of time it takes if you can save on your electric bill. Often, one phone call is all it takes to switch power providers. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Make sure you’re ready to switch.

If you’re happy with your current provider, there may be no reason to switch. Depending on the terms of your contract, you could be required to pay penalties or additional fees if you terminate your service early. Make sure you’re really ready for a new provider (and a different electric bill) before you begin.

  1. Shop around.

It’s a good idea to compare a few electricity plans that you’re interested in before choosing a new provider. The Public Utility Commission of Texas has a website, PowerToChoose.org, designed to help Texans compare residential electricity providers and select the best fit for their needs. Start there.

  1. Call or click.

When you’re ready to make a switch, simply call the provider of the plan you choose or sign up online. Your new provider will send you information for the plan you’ve signed up for. Review your contract carefully to be sure you want to switch power providers. Keep in mind that you have three business days to cancel your order if you change your mind.

  1. Sit back and relax.

Your new electricity service will begin with no interruptions. You don’t have to worry about any downtime in your electricity service, and service reliability is not affected by which provider you choose. Remember, each provider is selling the same electricity! Once you choose your new plan, it takes about seven business days for your switch to go into effect.
