How to Clean Your Kitchen Sink the Eco-friendly Way

by On Nov 5 2017

Think your kitchen sink is clean? Think again! We use our kitchen sinks many times per day, and simply running water down the drain doesn’t wash away germs and bacteria. Instead, you have to sanitize your sink. Here are Discount Power, we look for ways to go green beyond our renewable electricity plans. Here are two ways to clean your kitchen sink without washing harsh cleaners down the drain:

What You Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • Sea salt
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Lemon or lime
  • Ice
  • Old toothbrush
  • Sponge

How to Clean Daily

Abrasive sponges and cleaners for everyday cleaning can alter your sink’s finish, making it look old and worn. Instead, use a mild soap and sponge or rag for a simple wipe down of your sink.

  1. Thoroughly rinse the sink daily in order to prevent the salts and acids from tarnishing the finish of your sink.
  2. Lightly sprinkle baking soda across the sink and work it into a paste, then rinse.
  3. Line the sink with white vinegar-soaked paper towels. Leave them to sit for 30 minutes, then rinse the sink with soapy water.

For the faucet and handle, all you need is to wipe it down with a soapy, damp rag or sponge. You can use a toothbrush for areas that are harder to reach. If you’re still left with tough spots, then use a cloth soaked in white vinegar to scrub it down. When you’re done, remember to rinse it thoroughly.

How to Clean a Garbage Disposal

  1. Measure half a cup of baking soda and pour it down the disposal.
  2. Pour one cup of white vinegar down the disposal and allow this to sit for a few minutes.
  3. Boil a few cups of hot water, then pour this down the drain.
  4. Fill the drain with a handful of ice cubes and a cup of coarse salt. Run cold water and turn the disposal on. This mixture cleans the grinding part of the disposal.
  5. Cut your lemon or lime in half, and add the halves one at a time while the disposal is running.
