Questions You Should Ask When Looking for an Energy Company

by On Mar 15 2016

Whether you’re renting your first apartment or moving into your third home, choosing the right energy provider can be a daunting task. Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you’re asking your potential energy company the right questions to ensure you’re getting the best pricing and service.

Here are four questions you should ask when looking for an energy company:

Does it cost money to switch providers?

This question is applicable mostly to users wanting to switch companies. Some companies will have you sign up and then bombard you with outrageous new customer charges. Should you move again or decide that an energy provider isn’t right for you, knowing whether or not there’s a cancellation fee is crucial. Many times, people choose not to cancel their service because the cancellation fees are so high.

Is my information safe?

Credit card fraud is all too common these days. Before you hand over your account information, ask your potential provider about their payment management system and its security.

What’s the price per kilowatt hour? Is the pricing fixed or does it vary based on time of day or usage?

Each provider charges differently, so this is an important question to ask. Based on your energy usage, you should choose an energy provider whose pricing best fits your needs.

Is there an introductory rate? If so, what will the new rate be after the introductory period is over?

Oftentimes, energy providers will give new customers exclusive introductory rates. However, many people will forget that those rates are temporary and are surprised when they receive a higher bill after the introductory rate period.

Selecting the right energy company shouldn’t be overwhelming. By asking these five questions, you should be able to make the right choice for you and your family. Want more information or have additional questions? Feel free to ask us – we’re here to help!
